Nico's tasting note
The nose opens with a solvent quality that already suggests a nice concentration. The intense, dry and tight wood gives off scents of roasted nuts and heady flowers. Dark berry juices complete the serious and tense profile.
Aeration loosens all this up, and the rum starts to melt into dense, sweet fruit pastes. Red wine aromas then come through, still in a rather serious and grave atmosphere. Some red and black berry tannins, a hint of violet candy, and a new touch of solvent add to the complexity.
The palate is lively and concentrated, with fruit pastes spiked with striking spices. The waxed wood gradually unravels, and becomes increasingly tender at its core. In a shell of red fruit, floral and tobacco tannins, we discover a vanilla core with coconut milk, from which radiates an oily, almost tarry concentration.
The finish offers us a gourmet taste of nuts, with the slight astringency of walnut.
"A concentrated and complex rum, which supports the identity of Rivière du Mât a little more strongly..."
