Rivière du Mât VSOP 43°: Description and customer reviews

Rivière du Mât VSOP is a molasses rum produced in Saint-Benoît, on the east coast of Reunion Island.

The rum is fermented in open vats and distilled in a multi-tray column. It is aged in the Saint-Louis cellars for a minimum of 4 years in new and old oak barrels using Cognac methods, then blended by cellar master Jean Grondin.

Since 2011, the distillery has been committed to an eco-responsible approach, enabling it to be totally energy self-sufficient, with the aim of supplying part of the region with green electricity.

Nico's tasting notes

The nose opens with a gently spicy rum, with a rather dry but balanced toasty woodiness. The nuts emanating from the oak are also well-balanced, as they are relatively full-bodied while retaining a fairly fine hold.

Aeration considerably opens up the aromatic profile, which takes off towards fresh, light, colorful fruit. We encounter peaches, apricots, quinces and a few ripe pears. Then the spices come into play to give us a riper, more autumnal impression of roasted fruit lacquered with vanilla.

On the palate, it's the oak cask that takes the helm, taking us almost to the side of bourbon, with its vanilla and toasted, almost cereal-like notes. Spices are the order of the day in this rum with its soft, almost oily texture, punctuated by roasted nuts.

The finish is also spicy, caramelized and woody.

"A very well-balanced rum, pleasant and easy to enjoy..."
