Roble Viejo Ultra Anejo is a rum from Venezuela. Made from local molasses, it is a light rum distilled in a series of 5 columns. It's the "Roble", the oak, that gives it its amber color and luscious aromas.
This Ultra Anejo version is a blend of rums aged for 12 years in ex-bourbon American oak casks, as well as in old Pedro Ximenez sherry casks.
Nico's tasting notes
The nose opens with a three-dimensional rum, at once light, sweet and roasted. The coffee seems to want to take the lead, with a well roasted and powdery side, quickly taken over by a certain roundness that then prevents it from tickling the nostrils.
Aeration confirms the roundness, and takes us to an old, damp woodiness, soaked in light rum. Its melted surface bears the traces of extensive roasting, and its toasted aromas are equally melting.
On the palate, the rum walks a tightrope, falling on one side on toasted wood, and on the other on tangy sugar syrup. The result is a gourmet, tender woodiness, whose toasting has allowed maximum expression of vanilla. It flatters the tongue like a toffee, then grabs it with licorice and coffee, before releasing the embrace on a gourmet maple syrup.
The finish offers lovely roasted nuts well coated with caramel.
"A delicious, well-rounded rum that plays with the nuances of roasting..."

My podium! The Anejo is already very good and particularly surprising but then the Ultra Anejo is out of the ordinary. Everything is there.
