Rom De Luxe Collectors Series No.10 Barbados is a molasses rum produced by Foursquare, an independent, family-run distillery run by the illustrious Richard Seale.
The rum was distilled in an iron still in October 2002, and aged in an American barrel that had once contained bourbon. It remained there for 19 years, under tropical and then continental (for the most part) climates, before being bottled in April 2022 by Rom de Luxe in Denmark.
This unique cask bears the number 10. Bottling was carried out without reduction, and 214 bottles were issued worldwide.
Nico's tasting notes
The nose opens with a relatively light rum, adorned with woody pepper. The spices quickly melt to form a bold vanilla, enriched by a few vegetal, very slightly resinous nuances.
Aeration reveals a fruity rum, enhanced by the vegetal nuances seen on the first nose. Pears, green bananas and guava are surrounded by a slight bitterness of aromatic juice, before the whole becomes much more candied. This creates a gentle harmony that leads to an increasingly pastry-like profile, marked by bitter almond.
The palate is balanced in terms of both power and aroma. It displays enough energy to bring a certain freshness and grip, but remains accessible thanks to its velvety touch. The fruit is rather full-bodied, enhanced by a few hints of oxidation and pits, but also offers a certain mellowness that makes it tasty.
The finish is gently spicy, slightly coppery, and above all pastry-like, like a rum raisin ice cream.
"A fruity, pastry-like 100% pot-still Foursquare, rightly enhanced by a little bitterness..."
