Sample X (The Rum Mercenary - Kintra) Foursquare Single Cask 13 years is a molasses rum from the famous Barbados distillery run by the no less famous Richard Seale. It is a "single blended rum", i.e. a blend of distillates from a single distillery.
In this case, two rums have been blended in a single barrel, prior to ageing. On the one hand, we have a relatively light rum distilled from a Coffey column. On the other, a heavier rum distilled in a double-twisted Caribbean alembic.
The 13-year aging process was carried out partly on site at the distillery, and partly in Europe. The single cask is an American ex-bourbon oak barrel.
Nico's tasting notes
On the nose, we discover a typical Foursquare profile, with a fullness that is rather unusual. The wood and sweet spices seem to be illuminated by a thick, fruity flight that carries and magnifies the whole.
With aeration, the vanilla becomes very voluminous and round, coating the entire rum. The white wood fiber, for its part, is gorged with coconut flesh, and its edges are roasted to release some caramel aromas.
On the palate, there's a nice, diluted concentration of solvent and rather catchy wood, with a slight astringency. The mid-palate is full-bodied and rather round, with roasted nuts coated in caramel. The black pepper is quite dry and tasty, offering an almost mineral aspect that balances the whole.
The finish is soft, with soft oak and hints of vanilla and coconut.
"A very full, rounded rum, which offers a slightly drier, roasted mouthfeel..."
