SBS Origin Dominican Republic is a "grand aroma" molasses white rum. It is distilled in a traditional column and has an ester content of around 500 g/hlap.
It has been selected at an undisclosed distillery in the Dominican Republic for inclusion in The 1423 S.B.S Origin Selection collection.
The main objective of this selection is to highlight white rums characterized by their aromatic power and their singular profiles, which are far removed from the classic frameworks.
This rum is Reduced to 57°, just like the 3 other selections presented at the Rhum Fest Paris in April 2022.
Nico's tasting notes
On the nose, the Jamaica-style solvents or grand aroma leave no doubt that we're in the "high esters" category. Unlike the references cited above, however, this rum has something more monolithic about it, with the solvents really taking center stage, without sharing.
With aeration, the solvent still dominates, but develops over time into slightly oxidized, almost vinegary pear and apple notes.
On the palate, too, there's plenty of room for solvent, even if this more readily breaks down into pear and green apple, followed by blackcurrant and blackberry, thanks in particular to a welcome reduction. The latter gives the rum a pleasant, relatively oily texture, given its initial profile.
The finish develops nuances of baked sugar, with notes of solvent and geranium that linger into the long finish.
"A rather monolithic high ester, interesting to discover given its provenance, but destined to spice up cocktails or blends rather than be enjoyed neat..."
