Cuba's history and that of rum are intimately linked. Sugar cane was introduced to the island by Christopher Columbus in 1493. Tafia, the ancestor of rum made by the Maestros Roneros, soon became the favorite beverage of the sailors and buccaneers who populated the region. From the second half of the 19th century onwards, "ron superior", developed at the instigation of the Spanish Crown, foreshadowed the character of today's Cuban rum: light, tasty and delicate.

Located in Santa Cruz del Norte, in north-west Cuba, the Havana Club distillery was founded in 1878 by José Arechabala. The revolution of 1959 brought the company under government control. Thanks to a partnership between the Cuban government and Pernod Ricard, the brand has been present on the international market since 1993.

A museum dedicated to Havana Club is located in the heart of Havana's old town. Read less
