Pacto Navio is a brand from Pernod Ricard. It was launched at the end of 2016 and aims to compete with best sellers Diplomatico and Don Papa with a gourmet rum that is less sweet than its 2 competitors.

Its name is a reference to colonial history: 2 centuries ago, European settlers crossed the Atlantic to Cuba with holds loaded with mutant or sweet wines, including Sauternes. Indeed, this type of wine was able to withstand the voyage and the tropical climate.
Once the wine had been consumed, the oak barrels were filled with rum, which evolved over the weeks of the return journey.

This flourishing trade was abruptly interrupted by the Napoleonic wars and the English blockade. In 1815, a treaty ("Pacto" in Spanish) normalized relations between France and England, and trade resumed between France and the West Indies. As for the second term for this rum, it naturally comes from the ships ("Navio" in Spanish) that brought rum from Cuba to France. Read less
