A.H. Riise Non Plus Ultra Golden Amber 42°: Description and customer reviews

A.H. Riise Non Plus Ultra Ambre d'Or is the new version of the Non Plus Ultra Sauternes, which is being phased out. It was distilled in the American Virgin Islands, which were once Danish. It was from this northern European country that A.H. Riise, a pharmacist based in the Caribbean, obtained permission to distil the spirit. There he obtained permission to make all kinds of rum-based remedies.

This cuvée is a selection of the best barrels from the reserve, a limited annual edition that is finished in Sauternes barrels.

Nico's tasting note

The nose is a vanilla and orange candy, which immediately plunges us into an extreme greediness. A few spices such as cinnamon add a little grain to this very smooth rum, which shines through with its warm and syrupy side.

The aeration lets the vanilla gently fade away, to make way for very sweet and slightly acidic fruits. One thinks of an almost creamy strawberry or cherry.

The palate is as indulgent as the nose, and the rum immediately coats the taste buds with its sweet texture. Candied orange and tangerine light up the palate first, before being joined by Christmas spices.

The finish is long and sweet, with hints of chocolate oranges.

"A typical A.H. Riise style rum, with a very gourmet profile reminiscent of Christmas gingerbread..."

I hesitated for a long time between: "L'ambre d'or and l'ultra black". Even if both are very greedy, my preference goes to the golden amber. Indeed this candy with notes of candied citrus and slightly lemony is a delight. As the ultra Black it is sweet and spicy but fresher in the end and does not cause for me this effect of too much.

A fine, rich, sweet - vanilla flavoured, high character drink.
