Barikenn Antilles françaises 2017 is a 6-year-old pure cane juice rum produced in the French West Indies.
Distilled in column in January 2017, this rum was aged for 4 years in an American oak barrel in a tropical climate, then for a further 2 years in a first-fill ex-bourbon barrel in mainland France.
111 bottles were bottled in April 2023. This cuvée was not reduced before bottling.
Nico's tasting notes
The nose shows an almost surprising sweetness, full of soft wood and mild spices. Like almond nougat, it seems both mellow and fat, but the spices and oak begin to strengthen after a few moments.
With aeration, the indulgence reaches yet another level, as we discover various cookie doughs, be they chocolate, sweet spice or sprinkled with different nuts. And then once again, with rest, the woodiness becomes more robust, reviving an extremely weathered cane.
The palate is far more typical of a West Indian rhum agricole than the nose, and just as enjoyable. The sweetness is still there, thanks to a wonderfully well-regulated strength. This allows the flavors of the oak cask gorged with cane juice to unfold quietly, spice after spice, dried fruit after candied fruit.
The finish is just as tasty, with a mentholated pepperiness that picks up a few notes of dark chocolate along the way.
"A beautiful composition based on mature, gourmet cane juice..."
