La Favorite La Digue 2021 is an AOC Martinique agricultural rum produced by one of the island's last two independent, family-run distilleries. It is the result of both mono-parcel and mono-varietal selection.
Located on the riverbank just behind the distillery, the La Digue plot grows 4 hectares of reed cane (B59.92), an emblematic variety favored by many growers. The canes are cut by hand and transported to the distillery for grinding by the mills. This process is powered by the legendary steam engine dating back to 1906.
The vesou benefited from a long fermentation before being distilled in a copper Creole column in June 2021. The rum was then brewed and reduced for many months in stainless steel tanks, before 8500 bottles were bottled in January 2022.
Nico's tasting notes
The nose easily recalls just-pressed cane juice, rich, cloudy, and sweet at the same time. A small hint of peppery bagasse clings to it, it is completely soaked in juice and has shades of honey.
Aeration allows for deeper notes that flirt with mushrooms, black olives in tapenade and even soy sauce. Be careful, these notes are very measured and do not take over, the ripe cane remaining the main protagonist.
The palate is a very beautiful synthesis of everything that we saw on the nose, and surprises with its roundness which envelops the palate in a lascivious and warm way. The cane carries some notes of pepper, quite green vegetables, and even a hint of iodine. Then it becomes more colorful and clearly takes the direction of citrus fruits.
The finish is round and balanced, with freshly squeezed cane juice and scented with citrus pulp.
“A delight of cane juice enhanced with citrus zest…”
