Montebello 10 ans Brut de Fût Batch 1 is a Guadeloupe GI agricultural rum distilled in 2010 at the Carrère distillery. It spent 7 years in American bourbon barrels before being transferred for an additional 3-year finish in Cognac barrels.
Aging began in October 2010, and bottling at its natural alcohol content is scheduled for July 2021.
It's a limited edition of just 2000 with numbered bottles.
Nico's tasting notes
The nose of this rum is a cane candy slightly tinged with cream, like those vanilla or cherry and milk candies. This latent sweetness is rather incidental, however, since it is indeed the cane that dominates; a candied, resinous, vegetal and concentrated cane, full of promise.
After aeration, the rum continues to regale us with its ripe, candied, almost cooked cane, adding a good pinch of sweet spice and dried fruit. The wood tannins are completely melted, crushed and stretched like dried apricots or prunes.
The palate is lively, with slightly acidic, green tannins and barely mature fruits such as pear and star fruit. The rum then melts into sweetly spiced orange marmalade, with a hint of stone and pine resin. The dried fruits seen on the nose are now jammy, broadly spread across the palate and studded with cloves.
The finish is oily, pastry-like, but wrapped in a fragrant, elegant old woodiness.
"A generous Guadeloupean touch, full of candied fruit, pastry and resin..."
