Swell de Spirits Wonders of The World Australian Rum 2012 66,9°: Description and customer reviews

This rum from French bottler Swell de Spirits is a molasses rum from a secret distillery in Australia.

This rum was distilled from molasses in September 2012. It was then aged in first-fill bourbon casks for 6 years in the distillery's cellars in Australia, before completing its aging in the UK for a further 4 years. This single cask was bottled brut de fût in June 2022.

Only 368 bottles were produced. As we've come to expect from this bottler, there were no additions, and the color is natural. Finally, the rum has not been cold-filtered.

Nico's tasting notes

The nose opens with fairly light blond caramel, spiked with hints of red and black fruit. These fruits quickly gain momentum, and are served by a playful alcohol that evaporates in all directions. In this ethereal explosion, a surprising hint of fresh cane is detected.

With aeration, we find a dry, lively, rather metallic aspect, which now focuses on citrus peel and pips. The red and black berries are tart, their skins bitter and glazed with solvent.

The palate is powerful but relatively mellow, given the degree displayed. Citrus zest and dark berries slide across a slightly damp stainless steel surface, then land in a basket of grape marc. One thinks for a moment of a wine brandy, and then even of a gin, as the coppery notes and spices lend a hint of juniper.

The finish continues the planty, spicy theme, with a touch of pine resin and licorice.

"A rum with a unique, well-tempered character that sometimes flirts with aged gin..."
