The Rum Mercenary Enmore 27 ans is a very old molasses rum from Guyana. It was distilled in 1990 at the Enmore distillery, on the former pot-still of the now defunct Versailles distillery. This unique still is fitted with a local wooden vat, and produces a very specific and unique style of rum.
The mark on the barrel is MEV, which probably stands for Main Enmore Versailles, Main Rum being a well-known European broker.
It was bottled in 2018, as part of a collaboration with the Dutch Kintra Spirits.
Nico's tasting notes
The complex nose of this rum immediately takes us in several directions. There's a coppery side, typical of Demerara rums, followed by an almost medicinal vegetal side, full of resin and freshness. Finally, ripe exotic fruit coexists with a bitter, pastry-like almond.
On aeration, the coppery aspect is emphasized, in some ways reminiscent of pastry. Notes of stone, prunes, cherries, or simply almonds, have this concentration that seems to give off a trickle of solvent or hot metal.
The palate is sweet, but also mineral, metallic, almost sulphurous. This burnt aspect also evokes a handful of roasted cereals. Rye comes to mind, as does charcoal bread, with its dark, dry aromas. The pits are still there, quite hard, and still carry a few pieces of prune or brandied cherry flesh.
The finish is more pastry-like, as green almond adds its velvety touch. It also bears the trace of some concentrated, resinous vegetation.
