Berry Bros. & Rudd: The Widow Bourne, 1698 and No. 3 St James Street

Berry Bros. & Rudd was founded in England in 1698. As such, they are the oldest active wine and spirits merchant. Today, they are an independent bottler of whisky and rum.

Originally, a widow named Bourne set up a grocery store in London, not far from St James's Palace (which would become the royal residence). It’s called “The Coffee Mill”. Then, Bourne's daughter, Elizabeth, married William Pickering and they expanded the family business together. They are based at No. 3 St James Street and, although the store is not yet called Berry Bros. & Rudd , this will become the historic address of the company.

In 1760, the company supplied the royal family for the first time. Success was already on the cards.

In 1810, George Berry renamed the luxury grocery store after himself.
Moreover, because of his family connections and the 19th-century market, wines and spirits were given pride of place. Indeed, they gradually became the only products sold by Berry Bros. & Rudd.

Berry Bros. & Rudd: wine and spirits specialists

The Rudd family joined the venture in 1920. By 1923, the Cutty Sark had reached the American market. It was Berry Bros. & Rudd's first big success.

After the Second World War, the company continued to consolidate its position as a specialist. Indeed, Berry Bros. & Rudd continued to bottle wine into the 60s and sherry into the 90s.
Today, Berry Bros. & Rudd is a company that continues its heritage across the globe.

Nowadays, we find a whole range of spirits bearing the image of the London firm. We can cite many whiskeys and rums. However, they also offer blended malts , No. 3 London Gin and the Pink Pigeon and Penny Blue rums. Read less
