When we think of Mexico, we obviously think of tequila or mezcal, but Mexico is also a producer of rum.

Why shouldn't Mexico make rum? Thanks to its tropical climate and the humidity of the Caribbean and the Gulf of Mexico, there's a whole area that's ideal for growing sugar cane. The Cordoba region is recognized as the cradle of quality rum in Mexico.

The rums produced here are light and usually only aged for a short time. Today, the country boasts some one hundred artisanal distilleries. Alongside these artisanal distilleries, some of the rum industry's biggest names have set up shop here, including Bacardi and Seagram.

The main Mexican rums are Bacardi, D'Aristi Especial Reserve (created in 1935, aged 10 years in oak barrels), Porfidio (distilled by a tequila producer), El Ron Prohibido and finally Antillano (the range comprises Ron Antillano Blanco, Oro and Añejo). Read less
