Labourdonnais Classic Gold is an agricultural rum (pure cane juice) produced by the Mauritian distillery Labourdonnais.
This rum, aged for a few years, offers a beautiful combination of vanilla, cane sugar and coffee aromas, as well as a delicate woodiness.
Nico's tasting notes
In brief: apple - honey - woody - spices - nuts - orange - sugar
On the nose, it's the apple that first strikes you with its freshness and its unexpectedly pervasive presence. There's also a very sweet sensation, like melted white sugar beginning to caramelize, almost barbapapa-like. This takes us towards a kind of sweet Calvados that's quite astonishing. We could also think of a honeyed cider, with notes of oxidized apple tending towards walnut.
With aeration, a light vanilla woodiness is added to the still striking apple. The rum seems to have gained body, and the honey becomes increasingly assertive, even evoking mead.
On the palate, the rum is round, honeyed and rather spicy on the tongue. The woodiness is vegetal, with a hint of resin and liquorice. The very fruity notes are still present, but have become much more exotic, and are closer to the pure English style. Harlequin candy adds a touch of acidity, then apple and pear take us back to Normandy, to the Domfrontais region.
The finish is very long, with apple and orange stewed with spices, and an oxidized note of walnut.
"This astonishing rum lies somewhere between Mauritius, Brittany and Normandy..."
