Nico's tasting notes
On the nose, this is a full-bodied profile with a freshly baked edge. It combines notes of marzipan, yeast, raisins, licorice and freshly cut herbs. The woodiness expresses itself indirectly through a hint of nutty oxidation and well-melted scorched oak aromas.
Aeration reveals a pronounced rancio, with fatty, oxidized nuts and buttery notes. Roasted nuts easily join the picture, coated in molasses and star anise. There are also red and black fruit tannins, as in a port or sherry, and a hint of cocoa bitterness.
The palate is just as full as the nose. The difference, however, lies in the angle of attack. Here, we discover a dry, unadorned rum, with a palpable presence of the still and its burning copper. The exotic fruit notes are straightforward and sharp, with intense pits, but also rounder prunes and flavors that become increasingly creamy over time.
The finish is a little smoky and metallic, extending to cherry pit brandy.
"A full-bodied, mellow Port Mourant, which still retains a beautiful ardour on the palate...".
