Relicario Peated Finish is a version of the classic Relicario, finished for 6 months in peated single malt casks.
After ageing in the tropical climate of the Dominican Republic, the casks were transferred to the cellars of a distillery in Speyside, Scotland. The rum was then transferred to the casks that had previously held the Scotch distillery's peated whisky.
Nico's tasting notes
The nose is initially roasted, then slightly smoky, before turning to a more ashy, animal register, reminiscent of the character of a peated whisky. Nuts are coated in smoky caramel, making for a particularly gourmet experience.
With aeration, the caramelized nuts take center stage, and the rum's rounder side comes to the fore. Mild spices like vanilla make their way through the wisps of peaty smoke.
The palate is round but extremely ashy, with peat smoke that immediately fills the palate. The toffee remains greedy, however, and gradually swallows the smoke to bring us back to coated nuts.
The finish remains ashy, with a hint of acidity typical of peated whisky.
" After a particularly peaty attack on the palate, here is a marriage that is ultimately quite successful... "
