U.S. Virgin Islands
The U.S. Virgin Islands are located between the Atlantic Ocean and the Caribbean Sea. This group of islands enjoys a warm, humid climate, perfect for growing sugar cane. What's more, the land is mainly volcanic in origin, making the soil fertile and ideal for growing sugar cane.
Today, the Virgin Islands are split in two: one part belongs to the United States, the other to Great Britain. Rums are produced in completely different styles within the archipelago.
One of the most modern distilleries on the American side, "Nelthtropp's" on Sainte Croix, produces light rums. Distillation takes place in a column still (5 columns to be precise). This method produces fine rums. On the British side of the island, rum is produced in a more traditional way, in an old iron still.
The main rums from the US Virgin Islands are Cruzan (produced since 1760), Sailor Jerry and Red Rum. There are also lesser-known rums, such as the A.H. Riise brand. Read less
