With its classic, straightforward style, this Cuvée d'Excellence is a good representative of Saint James aged rums, and more generally of Martinique's AOC agricultural rums.
This is a blend of vintages at least 4 years old.
Nico's tasting notes
The nose opens with round, fleshy oak and mature cane juice. This typical Martinique rum profile evokes the seriousness and elegance of a spirit already well aged. Pepper and cigar smoke then balance with dried exotic fruits and a touch of iodine.
Aeration develops freshness, as pure cane juice emerges from its wood and leather case. Fruits like pineapple deliver a rich, sweet juice, then regain substance to become drier and candied again.
The palate is soft, though lifted by a hint of acidity and some mild spices. The wood tannins melt and stretch, creating a round, pleasant texture all over the palate. Pepper titillates the tongue, then spreads out, soon to be joined by more gourmet spices like cinnamon.
The finish is also typical of a Martinique rum, with peppery, dry, fragrant cane.
"A fine example of Martinique's savoir-faire, with a well-matured, well-crafted rum that never lets you forget the fresh cane from which it is made..."
Thierry
Good amber rum, very pleasant, good woody flavour and fresh cane.
