Wray and Nephew Overproof 63°: Description and customer reviews

Wray and Nephew Overproof 63° is a very popular white rum in Jamaica.
It is drunk neat, and makes excellent cocktails such as the Mai Tai or the Daiquiri.

Nico's tasting notes

In brief: powerful - solvent - cane sugar - ripe exotic fruit - almond - stone

The nose sends us straight to Jamaica, but the island is quite quiet at the moment, still fresh and early in the morning. The cane sugar escapes in a rather powerful blast. Despite a slight vegetal leaning, the solvent notes are slightly metallic and typically Jamaican.
Aeration brings out even more solvent, and the rum, freed of this ardor, begins to wink at us with fruit brandies. The sun has risen over Jamaica, and everything is rounder and fruitier. The ripe exotic fruits are nevertheless restrained, the almond is greedy and accompanied by rather engaging medicinal touches. With time (and a little care), the rum even becomes round and brioche-like.

The attack on the palate is much rounder than expected. The rum is full-bodied and envelops the palate, though without any real complexity. The toast rises and then lingers for a long time, making it ideal for cocktails. It then evaporates slightly, with light aromas of fruit stones (plum, cherry) and almond.

The finish is on cane sugar and even cane juice, which is quite interesting and unexpected. At the very end, there's a hint of bitter, coppery lemon zest.

"A mixology staple, it's easy to see why when tasted neat..."

Good rum but not to my taste, hence the note.

A "real" Jamaican! What a pleasure!
