Emperor Heritage is a blend of pure cane juice and molasses rums, aged either in American oak barrels that have previously contained bourbon, or in French oak barrels.
Nico's tasting notes
The nose of this rum is a real treat. The sugar is clearly distinguishable, as in a thick grenadine syrup. It's also reminiscent of a harlequin candy with tangy fruit, or a crunchy barley sugar.
After a little aeration, we get some equally tart red fruit, notably candied cherries. A few vanilla spices add a little variety, making this a rather elaborate sweet. Finally, aromas of familiar fruits such as banana and strawberry set the scene for this confectionery.
On the palate, the rum is fluid. We're rather surprised, as we were expecting something very syrupy. The candy taste is there, but the sensation is rather watery, not clinging to the palate. The aromas are faithful to those we perceived on the nose, again reminiscent of grenadine in cane sugar syrup. And then notes of coffee and burnt caramel, which we hadn't suspected, appear and assert themselves right through to the finish.
As the rum fades, it gives way to a light woodiness and a spicy sensation on the tongue.
